Town hall chiefs are pressing for a fairer funding deal which would bring hundreds of millions of pounds to the North East.

Ministers are reviewing the complex formula used to distribute cash to local authorities and their decisions will have a crucial impact on families in the North East in coming years.

Leaders of the Association of North East Councils reckon the difference could be an extra pounds 120m a year over the next four years ( or the region could lose pounds 67m a year.

The decision will have an impact on the size of council tax bills across the region and the level of services councils are able to deliver.

The association which represents 25 councils in Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and Teesside, say the impoverished North East already loses out to the more affluent South.

The North East has lost around pounds 100m in the past 10 years under the area cost adjustment which directs extra money to London because of the cost of hiring staff and running services. …
