Chester-le-Street were the area's leading finishers in the women's event at Mansfield.

The Cestrians, past winners of the three-stage contest, were in no way disgraced after Alyson Dixon set them off in 10th place on the first leg.

Steph Robson improved one position on leg two and fit-again Sarah Wilkinson managed to reel in two more rivals to bring Chester home in seventh place.

Morpeth, never got a telling blow and finished 17th of the 78 teams to finish.

Aiveen Fox ran the first leg and, with the team's fastest time, handed over to Jayne Mooney in 24th place.

Mooney improved eight places on stage two but Kate Chapman slipped back one spot to come home in 17th position.

Chester-le-Street B team, with Emily Waterhouse their fastest, finished four places behind Morpeth while their C team, with Kath Kelly, their quickest, came home in 53rd place.

While there were no medals for North East based athletes, two former Tyneside performers did make the podium. …
