A new centre has opened its doors to help North East dementia sufferers. Craig Thompson takes a tour

A multi-million-pound development which aims to reach out to those with dementia and mental health problems is now open.

The purpose-built pounds 2.6m facility, called the Bradbury Centre, will provide social, leisure and learning opportunities to thousands of people across the area.

It is hoped the centre, at Brunswick Village on the northern outskirts of Newcastle, will give those affected a greater sense of independence.

Established by the Dementia Care Partnership, it will take a holistic approach by focusing not just on the sufferer but on the whole family.

Trained workers will listen to their suggestions about the type of services and facilities which would make a big difference to their lives.

The Duchess of Northumberland, who officially opened the facility, said: "I am delighted to open the Bradbury Centre which is at the cutting edge in dementia care.

"It is good to hear that the centre design and its facilities came about as a result of DCP taking a holistic approach by focusing on the whole family and taking on board their suggestions that will make a big difference to their lives.

"I am impressed with the services on offer which is attractive to people of all ages."

The Bradbury Centre is unique in that many of the facilities are available to the local community. Stepping inside the facility, people are surprised when they come across a light, airy piazza.

The restaurant is a place where people, irrespective of illness, disability or background, can visit with or without their families.

The restaurant and coffee shop provide a social focal point and have been warmly welcomed by the local Brunswick community, especially older members. …
