How refreshing to hear today that one man, at least, is not giving up on the East Middlesbrough Bypass.

Despite the problems and obstacles that lie in his path, Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon has declared his intent.

He has pledged to tackle the obstacles one by one - however difficult.

How refreshing it is to be faced with a strategy that looks for solutions by driving a tank through bureaucracy and red tape.

Clearly there are many practicalities to be addressed in a plan that involves the switching of part of Redcar and Cleveland borough land across to Middlesbrough.

But the boldness and clarity of Mayor Mallon's thinking offers hope that the desperate need to toughen our fragile road network can become a reality.

In typical rough and tumble style the Mayor has grasped the bull by the horns, has itemised the issues, then has outlined the most direct route to dealing with them.

We have made it absolutely clear that we believe this bypass - or an equally radical solution - is essential if we are to have a transport infrastructure that can cope with the regeneration of the Tees Valley. …
