It was interesting to note the comments of Conservative Party leadership protagonists David Cameron and David Davis yesterday as they spoke about their views on regional development agencies.

They had different views on how they would handle organisations like our own One NorthEast ( should either get into Downing Street

But both left the overriding impression that they are not particularly keen on them.

Indeed, their comments will leave many wondering just what their solutions to the country's regional disparities are.

Mr Cameron presented us with the most radical solution to how the region would be represented were ONE to disappear.

Its functions, he said, could be "transferred to a group of councils" instead.

How exactly that will work he did not explain.

Old hands at this particular game will tell him that the likelihood is that "internal tensions and rivalries" would handicap such an organisation to a degree which would render it next to useless. …
