Red dye giveaway for thieves

Post Office raiders escaped with a cash haul ( worth absolutely nothing.

The money they escaped with in the terrifying strike will be contaminated with red dye.

As reported in later editions of last night's Chronicle, the thieves struck as Post Office delivery staff dropped off money at the Londis store, on Lingey Gardens, Wardley, Gateshead.

A security guard had made one delivery to the premises and was making another at around 3.10pm on Monday when he was approached and threatened by two men. One of them was armed with what is believed to have been a cosh.

The guard dropped the cash box and the pair escaped in the back of a Ford Escort van, driven by a third man.

But the box was fitted with a security device which was activated when it was stolen and the money will be contaminated by a dye, as the suspects may be themselves.

The store's owner told the Chronicle: "It seems one of the guards was coming in for a second time when he was threatened. …
