In response to the person from Heaton whingeing about ignorant staff and lousy service in shops and supermarkets, I would like to enlighten him/her on a few facts if I may. I work on a checkout in a large supermarket and this person would be quite shocked, I think, if they saw some of the things we have to put up with i.e. ignorance and verbal abuse which is totally out of order, believe me. At the store I work in we have to greet the customers, ask if they would like help packing their shopping and 99% of us chat with the customers while serving them, and not to each other.

The reason we may sometimes comment we are ready to finish our shift is probably when we've had a number of ignorant and nasty customers and all we wish to do is go home to chill out and de-stress.

I am not a young 'un, by the way, I am a mature lady of 60, who enjoys still working (most of the time). …
