Drivers on Redcar seafront are being urged to ensure road chiefs do not regret getting rid of the rumbles.

Four weeks of roadworks will finally see Redcar Esplanade's controversial rumble strips consigned to history.

Since their introduction seven years ago, the strips have, on the surface, helped improve road safety, cutting the accident rate by 68pc and reducing speeds to an average 18mph.

But they have also prompted a barrage of complaints from residents, businesses, bus drivers, taxi operators and other road users.

Now the council's highways services partner, McAlpine Government Services, has begun removing the final 21 strips as part of a pounds 230,000 road improvement package.

Fourteen strips, from Station Road to West Terrace, were removed earlier this year.

The noisy, jarring strips are being replaced by larger but less severe 'tabletop' humps.

The council's cabinet member for strategic planning, development and infrastructure, Councillor Eric Empson, now hopes motorists respond in a suitably safe manner. …
