Area high school football teams will travel as far as five hours Friday for the first round of the state playoffs, but fans looking for a good game won't have to go far at all.

Three of the first-round matchups with promise to be among the most competitive will each be played in the area: Raines at St. Augustine, Union County at Trinity Christian and Palatka at Jackson.

Raines (9-1) and St. Augustine (10-0) enter their Class 3A regional quarterfinal coming off dominant regular seasons, each featuring a ferocious brand of defense that could foretell a tight contest. Of the 19 wins they share, 18 came by a margin of two touchdowns or more. The Yellow Jackets posted five shutouts and held eight of 10 opponents to 10 points or fewer; the Vikings had two shutouts and held half under 10 points.

Union County's visit to Trinity Christian brings the intrigue of a small-town public school facing a big-city private school powerhouse. The Tigers have won three state titles (1994-1996), while Trinity has won two (2002, 2003). Jackson and Palatka last met in the 2000 playoffs, when the Panthers dispatched one of Jackson coach Kevin Sullivan's most talented teams 37-22 in the second round.

"Our kids are excited to get to play someone new," Sullivan said. "Palatka is very athletic and aggressive on defense, and their offensive line really explodes off the ball and gets under people."

Nineteen area teams qualified for the playoffs. Others playing at home include Bartram Trail, First Coast, Nease, Bolles and Potter's House Christian. Potter's House makes the first playoff appearance in the school's short history, and St. Joseph Academy qualified for the first time since 1977. All games are Friday except Lee High's visit to Tallahassee Lincoln, which will be played Thursday at Gene Cox Stadium.
