Tottenham manager Martin Jol leapt to the defence of Jermain Defoe ahead of tomorrow's clash with the striker's former club West Ham.

Defoe ( who angered West Ham by submitting a transfer request the day after they were relegated from the Premiership in May 2003 ( has scored only three goals this season, and just once in his last 11 matches.

But Jol insisted he had no worries about the form of the 23-year-old England international, who left Upton Park to move to the Hammers' London rivals in January 2004.

"Normally Jermain is very productive," said Jol. "He had two assists in recent games, and he scored a perfectly good goal in the 1-0 defeat at Bolton that was disallowed.

"His average is still good. If a striker scores one goal in three matches, he is a good player, and I would guess Jermain probably scores one every two-and-a-half games.

"If you look at his record since he joined Spurs, he has scored the first goal 16 times, 14 times last season and twice this year. …
