Police who flooded a town centre and park exactly a week after a woman was viciously and brutally raped were yesterday sifting through statements from weekend revellers.

The ferocity of the attack on a 21-year-old woman walking home through Blackhill and Consett Park in the early hours of Sunday, November 13 has shocked even experienced detectives.

Yesterday Det Insp Dave Wolfe, one of the officers leading the hunt, said the results of inquiries in Consett, County Durham were "mixed".

A strong police presence in the park and in Consett town centre where the woman had spent the previous Saturday night, led to dozens of people being questioned.

The victim, who lives locally, finished her evening in Trades nightclub in Consett's John Street shortly after 2am.

As she walked home she was flung to the ground and subjected to a "brutal, prolonged and sustained" sex attack. Her screams were ignored even though police said CCTV cameras showed several people in the park at about the same time. …
