Supping a beer at 9am when many people are still tucking into breakfast brings a whole new meaning to 'early doors'.

But that's exactly what one hardy drinker was doing today as pubs including the Thomas Sheraton in Stockton took advantage of the historic new licensing hours.

The pub is one of three Wetherspoon pubs among the many Teesside venues extending their opening hours from today, in line with the Government's new Licensing Act.

Brian Parkinson, first through the doors of the Thomas Sheraton, sat down with a pint and his morning paper in the still empty pub.

"I think the new licensing hours are smashing," said the 64-year-old soon-to-be-retired steel erector from Roseworth.

"I just popped in to have a nice quiet drink, and I know I'm not going to be rushed. You can come in any time you want now, drink in your own time and take it easy.

"I'm retiring soon and I think this is something I'll enjoy - if I have the money. …
