Carron Has a Swot at Livestock

Northumberland NFU chairman Carron Craighead is encouraging farmers to adopt a fresh approach towards the British livestock industry ahead of this week's county AGM.

With winter the traditional time to look back over the year, Carron says no one can avoid reflecting on the impact of CAP reform, particularly on the livestock sector.

But she said that it was time farmers turned over a new leaf in the New Year and adopted a different mindset towards their business.

She said: "The problems we face in the new de-coupled market are never far from people's minds this year, but now is the time to try and think differently about the future and change the way the livestock supply chain works."

With this in mind, and to stimulate debate among Northumberland livestock producers, Carron has attempted a "Swot" analysis, particularly for beef production.

"This involves looking at our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats ( something we will have to take really seriously if we are to achieve a thriving, profitable livestock industry," she said.

Under strengths, Carron highlights: The best tasting natural beef in the world; a fantastic landscape; consumers actively looking for added value; local food; thriving livestock auction markets; and the best stockmen. …
