Peter Ramage goes to the JJB stadium for tonight's Carling Cup tie with Wigan Athletic hell-bent on hanging on to his black and white shirt (writes Alan Oliver).

The young Newcastle United defender will make his seventh successive start, but he knows that first-choice right-back Stephen Carr could be ready when disgraced Aston Villa, well beaten by lowly Doncaster Rovers last night, come to St James' Park on Saturday after recovering from his groin problems.

Before heading off to Lancashire, Ramage said: "In a selfish way you don't want him to come back too quickly, but I know we need competition.

"We need players like Stephen Carr and Michael Owen back ( they're the backbone of this team.

"All I can do is give the manager a decision to make by playing as well as I can as long as he's out.

"I hope I've given the manager a bit of food for thought over the past few weeks, so when Stephen Carr comes back the manager has a bit of a selection headache. …
