A young driver was doing 117mph on an accident blackspot road.

But Marc Barber, 22, escaped a driving ban when he appeared before magistrates at Bedlington.

Computer engineer Barber, of Twenty-Fifth Avenue, Blyth, pleaded not guilty to exceeding the 70mph limit on the A189 spine road near the Three Horseshoes Roundabout on March 13, this year.

But the case was found proved by magistrates who were then told Barber already had three penalty points on his licence for a speeding offence in July last year.

The magistrates declined to use discretionary powers which could have disqualified him after hearing this could lead to the loss of his job.

He was fined pounds 250, with pounds 100 costs, and another six penalty points will go on his licence.

Barber was not represented in court and conducted his own defence.

He suggested the equipment used to catch him speeding could have made an error because a time-out signal had appeared on the photographs. …
