Today this column will tell you the Top Ten List of Things You Must Do Before You Die.

Pay heed and you will be happier, healthier and better off. You cannot expect to lead a fulfilled life without reading to the bottom of this page. After all, we all need a sense of fulfillment, don't we?

Psychologists suggest we are, in general, a desperately unhappy society ( far less happy, for example, than our ancestors of 100 and 200 years ago.

We should be laughing our heads off with joy as we flit from the latest Playstation to the mobile-camera-internet-phone, while driving our air-conditioned cars to stylish bar-restaurants with food airlifted in from all over the world, where we will discuss our children's potential university courses and glittering careers.

But we're not. We worry whether we've got the right Playstation, panic our super phone will lose signal, fret about the repayments on the car, wonder why air-freighted food doesn't taste of much and agonise our children might only go to a quite good university and get a quite good job, rather than a very good one.

Which is why the Top Ten List of Things You Must Do Before You Die, as advertised at the top of this column, should come to the rescue.

You will be used to advice from friends and the media to steer you through the complicated consumer jungle.

You will have seen films or books, or television programmes, described as `Must See' ( helping you decide, when there are so many screens, so many shelves in Waterstones, so many channels, what to do with the little time you have.

You will have noted the difference that seeing or reading the `Must See' film/book/programme made to your inner happiness, compared to not seeing it.

The Top Ten List is compiled using the many books, newspaper articles and TV shows on the theme, such as the Top 100 Sites To See In The World Before You Die, the Top 50 Culinary Experiences You Must Enjoy, the Top 20 Albums You Should Own and many more.

The media take great enthusiasm compiling these lists, convinced we will home in on them, hungry to feed the empty hole we feel at the centre of our being. …
