Adding Some Life Experience

Corpus Christi Primary has been given an Ofsted report that puts it among the best schools in the country.

The Gateshead school was praised for the standards of its teaching, leadership and support from governors, and for the progress made by children.

But, far from resting on its laurels, the school is trying to enrich its curriculum to give experiences to children that would not normally be available to primary age pupils.

That includes teaching in how to run a business, which led to the school winning an award at the Tyneside Economic Development Company's Enterprise Challenge, as well as language classes and outdoor education.

Headteacher Christine Ingle, who has been at the school for 11 years, said: "It's a really happy place and the children are delightful.

"We've got a good team and we're well supported by the governors, the parents and the local community. The parents really make a huge difference.

"The children are the most important thing and we're very proud of the way they turn out.

"Many of them come back to see us long after they have left; it's a real community."

In recent months, Corpus Christi has been placed charge of a project to co-ordinate extended school provision for itself and seven other primary schools in the centre of Gateshead. Rather than simply providing `wrap-around' childcare, staff have provided language courses and dance and art clubs so that the facilities add to children's experiences.

The school has a close relationship with Corpus Christi RC Church, which Mrs Ingle described as "enormously supportive".

She also pointed to the support given by parents as making a "huge difference" in the school's success.
