Robinson Set to Lose Player Release Battle

ANDY ROBINSON is destined to fail in his bid to get England players released by their clubs for an eight-week period covering the Six Nations championship campaign.

Head coach Robinson hoped to replicate the extended time he enjoyed with the squad during the Autumn internationals when they did not return to their clubs after each match.

Even with breaks between Six Nations matches, Robinson was banking on retaining control over the players to ensure they did not get injured on club duty.

However, the row between the clubs and the Rugby Football Union put the eightweek plan in jeopardy and now Ian McGeehcan, director of rugby at champions Wasps, has confirmed England players will not be spending two months exclusively under Robinson's control early next year.

England open their campaign against Grand Slam champions Wales at Twickenham on 4 February and with no peace deal likely to be signed between the clubs and the RFU before that date, Robinson will have just the week before the match with his players. …
