Blyth's premier boxing club is to hold a night of celebration after completing the pounds 45,000 purchase and renovation of their headquarters.

The Empire School of Boxing will host a show against a squad of Irish boxers at Menzies Hotel in Silverlink on December 14.

"Now we're back concentrating on boxing and our lads are champing at the bit," head coach Les Welsh told me. "This will be a special night for us all."

Welsh revealed the hard work and generous help that came to the fore when the Empire was about to collapse.

"The club was under threat and we had to raise around pounds 45,000 in a year to save it," said Les. "We did everything within our power but the major breakthrough came when the local council decided to pay half the sum to secure the gym for us.

"It was a magnificent gesture. Councils often take a lot of flak but we wouldn't exist without ours. They had faith in us and now we own our own premises lock, stock and barrel. …
