Leach Faces a Race to Be Fit for the Vipers' Weekend Double

Newcastle Vipers are sweating over the fitness of defenceman Simon Leach for their crucial double dose of Elite League action this weekend.

Rob Wilson's side face table-toppers Belfast Giants and second-placed Nottingham Panthers with Leach a major doubt after being hurt on Saturday.

The Great Britain international suffered a nightmare weekend after damaging his ribs following a collision against the boards in the 5-2 defeat against Basingstoke Bison.

It was Bison's Brad Cruikshank who delivered the check on Leach, who was today awaiting test results after a scan on Tyneside.

Cruikshank was ejected for the incident but it was of no consolation to Vipers, who slipped up against the struggling Hampshire side on a night to forget.

Leach could miss the trip to face Belfast Giants in one of Vipers' most important matches of the season.

Wilson's side are looking to topple the Elite League leaders Belfast, who have a 13 point lead over his third-placed outfit.

Despite the Irishmen's healthy lead, Newcastle have seven games in hand on the team who hammered them 8-2 at the Arena earlier in the season and go into the game with revenge on their minds. …
