Steve Bruce has branded Birmingham's home record as "horrific" after West Ham took advantage of more sloppy defending to inflict further Premiership misery on the Blues.

City's 2-1 reversal against Alan Pardew's side means they have collected only one point out of a possible 21 in front of their own fans.

Relegation is a near-certainty unless City can rekindle the form that saw them unbeaten at St Andrews from Boxing Day until the end of last season ( starting with Saturday's meeting with Fulham.

Birmingham even had the luxury of an early goal from Emile Heskey before their injury jinx struck again to leave Mario Melchiot (thigh), Muzzy Izzet (hamstring) and Martin Taylor (ankle) all sidelined for "the foreseeable future."

However, a quality goal from Bobby Zamora, who jinked his way past three players, and a clinical finish by Marlon Harewood left Blues anchored in 19th spot and in danger of being cut adrift of the safety line.

Bruce said: "I thought we defended poorly for the two goals, lapses of concentration.

"There is a claim the ball was out of play in the build-up for the second goal but I am not going to make excuses.

"I am fed up of making excuses. I also cannot fault the lads for their effort and commitment but they have to be a bit more clinical in front of goal. …
