Gutted When Move to United Failed

Michael Bridges' transfer to Newcastle United was the realisation of a dream for a Geordie but it was all too short and not too sweet.

Looking back, Bridges admits: "It was a desperate disappointment but the move probably came too early after all my injuries.

"Bobby Robson was terrific, phoning me when I was being released and explaining the situation."

Actually, Michael's eight games from February to May last year were the result of his second spell with United not his first ( he'd been with the club as a schoolboy.

"Leeds were in huge financial trouble as everybody knows and were shipping out players all over the place," said Bridges. "Two were already at Newcastle ( Woodgate and Bowyer. I had three months left on my contract, but it was cancelled to allow me to come to Newcastle.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to play with Alan Shearer and I was thrilled, but I only got a couple of starts ( one as a right winger against Valerenga ( and it didn't happen for me.

"I was gutted. Maybe if I'd scored against Marseille in the home leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final, when I went on as a sub and beat Fabien Barthez only for the ball to go the wrong side of a post, it might have all been different. …
