Ruud Gullit has emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacant Real Madrid coaching job.

The former Newcastle and Chelsea manager has been the subject of some hefty bets with Ladbrokes, who have halved his odds to 6-1.

Gullit resigned as manager of Newcastle after only five games of the 1999-2000 season when they were beaten by arch rivals Sunderland after the Dutchman had left local hero Alan Shearer out of the starting line-up.

The former European player of the year started his career in management when he was appointed player-boss of Chelsea in 1996 and won the FA Cup in his first season in charge.

But he was sacked the following year after a bust-up with former Chelsea supremo Ken Bates.

He managed Feyenoord in his homeland last season but quit in May when the Rotterdam club finished trophyless.

Gullit has also recently hosted his own television chat show in the Netherlands.

Former Deportivo La Coruna boss Javier Irureta has also been well supported and his price has tumbled from 12-1 to 7-2.

But England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was installed as favourite when Wanderley Luxemburgo was sacked on Sunday, has been friendless in the market. …
