A new garden in the heart of Newcastle's West End is being enjoyed by residents, young and old, who helped create it.

With a little help from Newcastle's New Deal in the Community, the community garden has been created just outside Cruddas Park shopping centre.

And thanks to the help of green-fingered residents, it promises to bring an explosion of colour in coming weeks and months as more than 150 bulbs begin to flower.

Bob Malpiedi from Activities for Health, which is supported by Newcastle New Deal for Communities said: "We adopted the land through the City Council's Adopt a Plot scheme and local people have really got behind the project, helping every step of the way.

"They have done everything from designing the garden to planting and weeding.

"It's great to be able to offer people the opportunity to get involved, especially as not everyone has a garden of their own to enjoy.

"I've lost count of the number of people who've stopped to say what a big improvement the garden has made to the front of the shopping centre and how much they like it. …
