Christmas meals out are now more popular than ever, with groups of friends, families and workmates gathering in hotels, restaurants and nightspots to eat, drink and be merry.

As far as office parties go, it can be one of the few times the normal barriers of rank can be relaxed, so it's important to plan well in advance.

Bookings are now in full swing for the more popular venues which can be fully taken before most people have even thought about Santa or tried to get the boss's secretary under the mistletoe.

However, there are a few rules to be followed if the party is to be a success.

First, get a selection of menus from different venues. Most caterers have already organised their arrangements.

Ensure everyone entitled to come gets to see a copy of the menu. Posting details on the notice board is always a good idea.
