Rescue Mission Fund-Raiser Is No Snoozer; These Teams Dress Up to Suit Movie Themes, Then Take to Their Beds for a Morning of Racing

It was cool and overcast early Saturday, a good morning for sleeping in.
Which, as it happened, wasn't why Robert Ryan was still in bed.
Ryan, a student in the Life Builders program at the McDuff Campus of the City Rescue Mission, was part of a six-man team taking part in what was called the Ultimate Challenge, a bed race between residents of the McDuff Avenue and State Street campuses of the rescue mission.
Their race, one of four held on the streets that surround Fletcher Park in San Marco, was part of The Great City Rescue Mission Bed Race, an event designed to raise money and awareness for the City Rescue Mission.
Adding to the fun, each team of bed racers picked a movie and tried to dress thematically.
Thus you had teams representing such movies as The Lion King, The Wedding Crashers, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Revenge of the Nerds, Blankman, Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz.
Saturday's was the second in an event that the rescue mission would like to make an annual tradition, said Valerie Wrenn, the rescue mission's director of development.
She said she was delighted with the results, estimating that about 500 people showed up to watch the races. More than $17,000 was raised.
This year's event was moved from Treaty Oak Park to Fletcher Park partly to shorten the course to about seven-tenths of a mile.
That sat well with members of Itel Inc.'s team.
"We about had heart attacks last year," said Vic Summers, dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
"We're old," said Fred Mol, the company's vice president for sales.
Mol was holding one of those poster-size pretend checks in the amount of $3,000, though he noted that the real check the company gave to the City Rescue Mission was for $3,052.
As it happened, while Itel won the trophy for best costumes, the top fund-raising team was Ferguson Waterworks, which raised $3,275. …
