Town's Shopping Centre Given Designer Look ( and a New Name

The development of Middlesbrough as a shopping destination has always been a key part of the town's economic strategy.

The town has recently seen a major change with the opening of several designer stores in Linthorpe Road creating a stylish new sector.

The opening of designer department store Psyche has buoyed the area and seen several high quality menswear and womenwear stores follow in its wake.

But what of the traditional Middlesbrough shopping centres which were so long the focus for keen shoppers?

The Cleveland Centre is Middlesbrough's largest shopping centre, covering 400,000sqft. It has now been renamed The Mall Middlesbrough following a change in ownership to Capital and Regional and Morley Fund Management.

The centre, which houses high street names such as Boots, WHSmith and HMV, recently unveiled one of the biggest planned transformations in its history.

The Cleveland Square area of the shopping centre was previously home to a replica of Captain Cook's famous HMS Endeavour.

But now construction has started to develop the area into four new retail units, providing 30,000sqft.

And centre bosses have now revealed Swedish fashion firm H&M and Asda stand-alone clothing store George will be among the four new tenants.

The attraction of two big-name retailers to The Mall Middlesbrough is a major coup and talks are understood to be at advanced stages for the two remaining units in the Cleveland Square development.

David McNee, The Mall Middlesbrough general manager, said: "We are very pleased H&M and George have chosen The Mall Middlesbrough for their first stores in the town. The work we are carrying out will create the best modern retail space in Middlesbrough and we are confident this will attract a range of exciting new retailers to the town."

The 12,000sqft George store is one of only 10 of Asda's clothing-only outlets nationally. It follows news last month that Asda was creating 450 jobs on Teesside with a pounds 20m import centre at Teesport. …
