A group of teenagers raised pounds 50,000 to build a school in Africa.

The 10 15-year-olds from Norham Community Technology College, North Shields, were asked to raise pounds 20,000 as part of a trip to Eritrea.

They spent their free time packing bags in local supermarkets, running stalls at schools and organising sponsored runs and bike rides.

They travelled to Eritrea and worked with local youngsters who have to sit on stones in their makeshift classrooms because they have no chairs.

The pupils are now trying to persuade North Tyneside Council to twin North Shields with Hawatsu, the village they visited, to keep up the special link they have started.

Wendy Hodgson, the College's business manager, who nominated the group, said: "The students helped to inspire the college community and the people of North Shields to work together to turn a dream into a reality and exceed all expectations.

"The funds raised will not only fund the building of two classroom buildings but will also mean they can be furnished and equipped with teaching resources and a well and an irrigation system. …
