Around 6,000 vessels use the river Tyne in a typical year ( ranging from navy ships, cargo ships, cruise ships and ferries to smaller recreational vessels such as powerboats, yachts, sailing dinghies, rowing boats, canoes and jet skis.

Despite being a busy commercial waterway, the River Tyne is widely used for leisure purposes and has boosted tourism in the region.

The waters of the Tyne are a hub of activity also providing the stage for the annual Northumbrian Water University Boat Race, which sees Newcastle and Durham universities battling it out for the coveted title.

The 1,800m race route, from Dunston Staithes to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, attracts thousands of people each year.

The Port of Tyne's jurisdiction stretches from one mile seaward of the North and South Piers, upstream to a point eight miles above the bridges at Newcastle, close to Ryton. Throughout this area, the Port of Tyne Authority General Bylaws apply.

The Harbour Master has the principal operational responsibility for safety of navigation in the Tyne and it is his job to maintain the balance between recreational and commercial activity to ensure the safety of navigation.

Traffic movements are monitored 24 hours a day by Tyne Port Operations and Information Service based at North Shields.

Fishing is another popular leisure pursuit and thanks to changing industrial patterns and campaigns such as The Clean Tyne Project, the River Tyne is now regarded as one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the UK.

There's no doubt that the transformation of the riverside has resulted in new leisure and lifestyle opportunities for the people of the North-East.
