A Whitby couple were in for a surprise when they took a trip on the world's largest passenger ship, the Queen Mary 2.

On their first voyage on the ocean liner, they discovered that the captain comes from Sandsend, just down the coast from their home!

Travel agents Glyn and Anne Stead, owners of Getaway Travel in Whitby and Scarborough, were treated as VIPs during their six-day crossing to New York.

Eager to join in the activities on their first day at sea, Glyn checked the daily programme and couldn't believe his eyes.

An article about the Master of the QM2 said: "Captain Bernard Warner was born in Yorkshire. He has been an officer at sea for more than 39 years and in command for the past eleven.

"His father owned a small boat at Sandsend near Whitby and it was here he formed a lifetime friendship with the sea."

Glyn said: "We knew captain Warner had been Captain of the Golden Princess and one of his last duties on board was to marry former Whitby restaurant owners Terry and Andrea Foster in June. …
