Festive spirit was the main theme at South Northumberland Pony Club's Christmas Showjumping Show at Holmside Park near Chester-le-Street, highlighted by a two round 90cm Dengie showjumping qualifier in the afternoon.

Thirty two horses and ponies came forward for the potential four qualifying places and were quickly reduced to 16 clear rounds, many having difficulty at the mid-course long pony stride combination.

South Northumberland's 14-year-old Harriet Armstrong and her 12-year-old 14.2hh bay mare Flighty Eliza set the jump off pace against the clock by finding an excellent turn into the combination going clear in what eventually would be a winning time of 30.47 seconds.

Half went out on four faults at various fences including the combination and planks. Harriet said later: "My strategy was just go fast and get the accurate turns which paid off and I'm pleased to qualify for the next stage."

The nearest challenge came from Alice Lumley on Triple Gold, whose double clear was only 2/10 second behind the winner. …
