Stephen Hendry inflicted more misery on his close friend Mark Williams at the Travis Perkins UK Championship in York - but insisted the former world number one's game is not in terminal decline.

Snooker's most successful player ever eased into the quarter-finals with a quickfire 9-3 victory over struggling Williams, who has tumbled from being the game's premier force to a man in danger of dropping out of the elite top 16 in the space of less than three years.

At present it is difficult to see Williams contending for any tournament, and Hendry has already mocked his pal's practice ethic, which the Welshman himself admits is not always up to scratch.

But such is the natural ability the Cardiff-based 30-year-old possesses that Hendry feels it is a case of when, rather than if, he collects another title.

"Mark is one of the most talented players ever and there is plenty of time for him to come back and win tournaments," said the 36-year-old from Perthshire, who dominated snooker through the 1990s. …
