Please excuse me for a few sentences while I make myself into a real hypocrite.

But it's in a good cause.

Well, kind of. If there's one thing that drives me mad it's those football phone-in callers bleating on endlessly about the man in the middle; telling us how hard done to their team was and how the appalling referee cheated them out of the points.

Going on and on and on about that ridiculous offside decision and the outrageous sending off.

You get home - because, let's face it, who on earth listens to these things when they're not in the car - switch on the TV highlights and prepare yourself for one of the great scandals of modern times and guess what?

Yes, it's clear that Ameobi was an absolute street offside and, as for Shearer, that mid-air challenge was a definite red.

What on earth was that bloke on about?

Isn't it always the same? It might not be conducive to criticise the chairmen of clubs, not conducive that is unless you're prepared to enter into a libel action. …
