Andrew Durham's dreaming of a natural Christmas

By now most of us have our decorations sorted, tape has been adhered to goodness knows where and drawing pins have caused many a punctured thumb but hey, as Noddy Holder once said, it's Christmas!

Your decorations may be flashy, minimal or traditional, but whichever look you've gone for there are always a few last-minute touches that can be added to your festive home.

But don't worry if you're one of those shoppers who have everything in hand and fear venturing into the shops again because this is all about the true great outdoors ( the countryside.

No Christmas house looks complete without a clutch of "real" trimmings, whether you go out collecting all the boughs and berries yourself or whether you opt for the cheat's version of visiting your nearest garden centre or holly-selling market stall.

A Christmas home isn't truly Christmas unless you've got some festive foliage around the place and not only does it look good but it also smells fantastic.

Nature provides us with a multitude of ways to festively dress our homes and an invigorating walk in the countryside combined with a visit to your local art store could be all you need to brighten up your home.

Berries and fruits of all kinds can be used in this look and the good news is this year there are more berries out there than usual ... however the bad news is that this indicates a long and cold winter ( ah well, you can't win them all and at least our homes will look pretty when we're holed up hiding from the elements!

Anyway berries (providing the birds haven't got there first!) can look stunning and there is a huge variety to choose from. Scarlet rowan berries, snowberries, traditional holly, cranberries and so on. The best thing about this look is that it is meant to appear rustic, so a simple clutch of berries in a white porcelain jug will look beautiful. …
