Flu Vaccine in Good Supply, Nassau County Officials Say

Article excerpt

NASSAU COUNTY -- Nassau County's influenza vaccine supplies should last through the winter, county health officials said this week.

Nassau County Health Department Epidemiology Nurse Kim Geib said Monday that area doctors reported good supplies of flu vaccine as of Nov. 18.

While the county health department was out of the vaccine for children on Monday, Geib said officials expect a batch to be delivered in about a week.

"Right now, we're good," Geib said. "We do have adult vaccine still. We've done over 583 flu vaccinations, and that's about average. The [vaccine] vendors also gave quite a few at Publix and Walgreens."

Florida Department of Health spokesman Doc Kokol said Tuesday that since waves of flu usually start in the colder Northern states and move south, Floridians can be immunized through December for protection against anticipated peaks in January and February.

"You can get a flu shot in December and it will help you," Kokol said. "It takes about two full weeks [to take effect]."

Some parts of Florida have experienced vaccine shortages, Florida Secretary of Health M. Rony Francois said in a Nov. 10 release.

But in Nassau County, vaccine demand didn't spike beyond available supply, Geib said.

"We've had steady requests, but not too high or low. Northeast Florida is OK with their supply. Further south, it may be an issue with supply and demand," she said.

New shipments in recent days have helped statewide, Kokol said.

"We are getting more flu vaccine, and another shipment is anticipated. We're hearing that more and more flu vaccine is getting into the pipeline and into the hands of physicians," Kokol said.

Flu reports were "sporadic" overall in Florida and 20 other states for the week of Nov. 7, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. …
