man charged with sexual battery on young girl

St. Johns County authorities arrested a St. Augustine man for capital sexual battery Nov. 26 after a report he abused a girl under the age of 10 while babysitting her.

Dean Claude Odermatt, 59, of the 800 block of Gerona Road, remains in jail with no bond.

A police report said authorities investigated the incident after Odermatt's wife contacted them and said Odermatt told her about it. He became acquainted with the victim's family while working as a maintenance man for the Homeless Coalition, and the abuse allegedly took place on several occasions, the report said.

Police are continuing the investigation to determine if there are other victims.

4400 block of Comanche Trail Boulevard: Police arrested a 17-year-old boy on burglary charges after a witness said he saw someone enter his vehicle Nov. 26.

An arrest report said the witness called police after he saw a boy enter his vehicle at about 9:20 a.m. The man said he confronted the youth after watching him pulling on other vehicle door handles. A St. Johns County Sheriff's deputy arrived and found the boy inside another vehicle down the street, the report said. Police said further investigation revealed someone entered two garages and three other vehicles in the neighborhood and the boy had in his possession a satellite radio, a radar detector and an 18-pack of beer taken from two vehicles and a nearby garage.

The boy was charged with three counts of burglary to a conveyance and two counts of burglary to a dwelling. He was booked into the county juvenile detention center.

2200 block of Marlee Road: Police arrested a Fruit Cove man Nov. 26 on a charge of hosting an open house party.

A police report said deputies arrived at a home after a complaint of a loud party at 10:30 p.m. Arriving deputies saw a large bonfire near the back of the home with about 50 people surrounding it. The deputies found numerous people under 21 who had been drinking alcoholic beverages, the report said.

Parents were called to pick up their kids. Mark Anthony Kelco, 19, of 2265 Marlee Road South, was booked into the county jail.

st. augustine

Florida 16 and Interstate 95: A Tampa man told police Nov. 17 his truck was stolen a month ago after he visited a hotel room on Florida 16.

A police report said the man told authorities he met two women at a bar and took them to a room at the Ramada Limited hotel. The women asked to use the man's 1998 Toyota Tacoma but he refused, instead giving them money to pay for a cab, the report said.

The man said he later realized the two women were gone and so was his truck, valued at $5,000. A deputy asked the man why he waited so long to report the theft, and the man replied he "just did not get around to it," according to the report. The truck has a Florida tag of X99 MAM.

Mizell Road: Police arrested a man and a woman on drug charges Nov. 22 after a traffic stop. According to an arrest report, a St. Johns County Sheriff's deputy saw a 1999 Isuzu traveling on Florida 312 with an expired tag and he stopped the vehicle on Mizell Road. A computer check of the driver's license showed it was suspended and a search of the vehicle revealed a bag of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Scott Allen Brown, 22, of the 100 block of Schooner Court was charged with possession of cocaine and driving with a suspended license. …
