There has been plenty of Christmas cheer about this week as local angling clubs begin to get the Yuletide season off to a good start.

Always well supported, the Thornaby AA Christmas Cheer match was fished around Croft and Hurworth under perfect winter conditions.

Dad and lad Mick and Malcolm Clitheroe of Darlington had plenty to smile about on a day when chub were the target fish.

Mick won a tight tussle with a chub and grayling net that took the scales around to 19lb 14oz by fishing the bomb with bread and the stick

float from peg 59.

Malcolm, meanwhile, fished peg 24 with the bomb using paste and bread for 14lb 3oz.

Mal Watson of Darlington came third with 10lb 6oz.

The biggest weight of the week was at Woodlands last Sunday when only 27 anglers fished.

Andy Dargue (Shimano Quaker) led the race with a cracking 79lb 12oz bag of prime carp by fishing the feeder and the pole. Team-mate Malcolm Dunlop was some way off the pace with 41lb 1oz and local Keith Kotchie (Garbolino Elton) came third with 38lb 11oz. …
