Mini miracles are being performed as we speak.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma are fleeing at the mere mention of the word.

And there's no faddy diets or gimmicky far flung remedies.

It's plain and simple - exercise.

Phil Barker is a shining example of the wondrous magic just 40 minutes a day can work.

He has not only lost weight through his visits to the gym.

The 46-year-old who suffers from diabetes no longer relies on injecting himself twice daily with insulin.

Local government officer Phil was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about four years ago and was prescribed medication to help control his condition.

The father-of-three has been going to Oxygym in Billingham five times a week each morning before work and has already dropped a stone-and-a-half in two months.

And the results are even more astounding as he no longer needs insulin injections.

"I measure my blood sugar with a metre and realised I didn't need as much.

"After four weeks I stopped my daily injections completely.

"Exercise has replaced the insulin I was taking which is so much better for me as I had concerns about the amount I was taking.

"I'm delighted and spurred on to keep going."

Phil explains the workouts have stimulated his muscles to accept the insulin he produces. …
