Mart to Stay at Arsenal

Arsenal have taken over goalkeeper Mart Poom's contract, bringing to an end his time on Wearside, (writes James Hunter).

The Estonian international joined the Gunners on loan until January, with the Londoners having the option to keep him until the end of the season.

Arsene Wenger has decided to keep Poom, and that means he will not return to Sunderland as he is out of contract in the summer.

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy confirmed: "Poomy is going to stay with Arsenal.

"They had the option of keeping him for the rest of the season and they have exercised that option.

"Poomy is out of contract at the end of the season anyway, so he will not come back.

"He's been great for us and everyone here wishes him all the best."

Poom made 68 appearances in all competitions in two years at Sunderland since his pounds 2.5m move from Derby in January 2003.

He also memorably scored one goal, against his old club at Pride Park in September 2003. …
