To celebrate the official opening of Dance City's new pounds 7.6m dance house, the National Dance Agency for the North East of England is presenting Free at DC.

Running from January 2 to 7, it comprises free classes, workshops, seminars, exhibitions and performances at Dance City, off St James' Boulevard in Newcastle.

Strictly Come Dancing may have ended but dance fever is about to hit Tyneside. Free at DC is an unprecedented opportunity for the people of the region to give dance a go ( and it won't cost you a penny.

Janet Archer, Dance City director, says: "We have a first-rate dance facility here at Dance City that we're very, very proud of."

"It's the first of its kind in this country. We want to welcome as many people as we can through our doors in the coming years and Free at DC is a wonderful way to begin.

"While we provide spaces and performance opportunities for professional dancers and dance companies, we want to make it clear that dance and Dance City is for everyone.

"A place where people can learn a new skill, meet like-minded people, get fit or simply have a thoroughly good time, whether they're attending classes or performances. I sincerely hope and believe that during the course of Free at DC we can ignite a new passion for dance within the people who attend. I'm very excited about the wonderful possibilities ahead of us."

Free at DC promises to provide something for everyone, with a six-day programme consisting of 89 dance classes of all styles and for all ages and abilities ( 44 10-minute demonstrations on the hour every hour of various dance styles from professional dancers in the Dance City social space; four evening gala performances; one health fair with 14 stands; a dance seminar with five key speakers; two building tours with Q&A sessions led by Dance City lead architect Clive Albert; three dance discussion forums open to all; specially commissioned dance films; and three late-night parties. …
