A family spoke of their relief this morning after escaping a severe kitchen blaze at their Acklam home.

But widow Margaret Clifford, 66, broke down in tears as she inspected the damage to her recently-decorated house in Ennerdale Avenue.

"I'm so glad we all got out safely," she said. "But I just don't know where to start. My newly-fitted kitchen is ruined. I've also lost a pounds 700 sofa and new pans which cost me pounds 100.

"The house is up for sale as well. It couldn't have happened at a worse time. I just want to start cleaning but we can't do anything until the insurance people come round.

"I've never had a fire before and it's just so upsetting."

The fire started at around 7pm last night after a chip pan caught alight on an electric cooker ring.

The smoke alarm was triggered and Margaret, her son and daughter John, 34, and Debbie, 38, and two grandchildren, Hollie, 11, and Casey, two, managed to flee. …
