KAUTO STAR, 7-2 favourite with the sponsors for the Victor Chandler Chase at Cheltenham, has been ruled out of the race by trainer Paul Nicholls.

The six-year-old would have carried top weight in the two mile race after an impressive win in the Tingle Creek Chase last month.

However, Nicholls has decided to bypass the Victor Chandler in favour of the totepool Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on 11 February.

Nicholls said: "Kauto Star had a little holiday after Sandown and has only just started working again.

The plan is to go straight for the Game Spirit."

Kauto Star heads the market at 7-4 for the Champion Chase, but one rival he will not have to face is Eamon Sheehy's Rathgar Beau.

The 10-year-old has injured a tendon and will be out of action for the rest of the season.

PAUL NICHOLLS has entered useful hurdler Neptune Collonges for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The five-year-old was last seen when finishing second in the Long Walk Hurdle at Chepstow and although he has yet to run over fences in Britain, he was a five-time winner over the bigger obstacles in France. …
