Labour councillors have pulled out of supporting a Redcar and Cleveland Council delegation to meet a Government minister over cash support.

The coalition-run authority has hit out at the Government's financial support settlement for the coming year.

It claims population miscalculations had cost the council pounds 1.5m in Government support and it had lost another pounds 1.8m because of extra support for South-east councils.

A delegation from the council led by Councillor Valerie Halton, cabinet member for children's services, is due to meet Local Government Minister Phil Woolas on Tuesday.

But Councillor Norman Davies, the Labour group's spokesman on resources, will not be part of the delegation.

Labour Group leader George Dunning accused the council's ruling coalition of being cynical in the way it was trying to blame the Government over technical adjustments to the budget settlement. The issue should be pursued in a more low-key and measured way. …
