Teenager in Fight for Life

Article excerpt

A teenage girl is fighting for her life after being flung from a car as it hit a kerb and overturned.

The 18-year-old is described as "very poorly" in Newcastle General Hospital after the accident in South Shields yesterday.

Police say she was travelling south on the A183 Coast Road in a blue Vauxhall Astra when the driver lost control and the car flipped over.

The unnamed teenager, who was in the back, was thrown from the car.

A police spokesman said: "The driver of a Vauxhall Astra pulled out to overtake another vehicle, lost control and hit the kerb and a pedestrian bollard.

"The vehicle left the carriageway and mounted a grass verge. It then overturned, throwing out a rear-seat passenger."

The accident happened at 9.48am 500 yards south of the roundabout junction with Mowbray Road.

Police closed the road for an hour and a half to carry out an accident investigation.

Witnesses of the accident are asked to contact motor patrols on (0191) 454 7555 ext 65946. …
