Boro were plunged into crisis today with the news that influential skipper Gareth Southgate has suffered a suspected broken ankle.

The former England international could be sidelined for up to three months if today's scans confirm the club's suspicions.

Boro are already fighting a battle for their Premiership survival and this news is a body blow for the whole club. The club has failed to meet expectations this season and has slipped to fifth bottom place, just five points clear of the relegation positions.

The loss of Southgate will make the battle for survival all the more difficult.

Boro have reacted immediately by pulling the plug on fellow central defender Ugo Ehiogu's projected transfer to West Bromwich Albion.

Ehiogu, who had been expected to sign for the Baggies this week, will probably be pitched straight back into the Boro side at Arsenal on Saturday.
