I love Leeds. Its architecture, nightlife, people ( oh, and did I mention the shops?

Leeds is a shopping Mecca. And we're not talking soulless mega-malls here. The city centre boasts a fine array of stores to suit all pockets, many in picturesque arcades. With it being sales time, what better reason for making that under-two-hours trip to get some of the best bargains going?

First, though, you need to find a base. We stayed at the Leeds Marriott Hotel for two nights, and what a good choice it turned out to be. This hotel is in the heart of the city, close to the train station, if that is your chosen mode of transport, and adjacent to an NCP car park, with which you get 10% discount if a guest.

Boasting six floors, more than 200 rooms and eight suites, it has what you would expect of a Marriott. While the rooms may not be as modern in decor or feel as newer hotels, they have a certain quaintness about them.

It also has a gym, pool and sauna ( the perfect way to unwind a few hours after sampling what I deem to be the hotel's best attributes, its two restaurants. Here is where the hotel excels itself, and both eateries couldn't be further apart in styles, offering terrific choice.

First up there is John T's, a traditional restaurant with a changing table d'hote menu. The present menu, which runs until January 20, boasts starters like Poached Pear, Stilton and Creme Fraiche with Baby Leaves and Port Dressing, Asparagus Tart, and Poached Egg Glazed with a Cheese and Butter Sauce. Main courses include good old-fashioned Roast Sirloin Of Beef with Yorkshire Pudding , Onion Gravy and Mashed Potato, Roulade of Turkey with Cranberry and Leek Seasoning and Port and Redcurrant Jus, Pan-Fried Red Mullet with Egg Noodles, Pak Choi and Spicy Chilli Sauce and Seared Calves Liver with Puree of Shallots, Black Pudding Mash, Apple Vinaigrette and Red Wine Jus.

Desserts offer up the likes of Grand Marnier Bread and Butter Pudding with Orange Syrup, Vanilla Ice Cream or how about the Banana Tart-Tatin with Iced Cinnamon Parfait? …
