Fans today told of their disappointment at Sven-Goran Eriksson's claims that Michael Owen is unhappy on Tyneside.

The Swede is reported to have said Owen told him he was `not really happy' with life at St James' Park and claimed the money he was being paid was the reason he signed for Newcastle.

In an interview with an undercover reporter, England boss Eriksson is alleged to have asked the striker if he was happy at Newcastle.

Eriksson told how Owen reportedly said: "Not really with the club, but economically I never earned that money in my life.

"They gave me a house, they gave me a car, it's incredible."

The England boss is then alleged to have said United had to pay Owen this amount because in no other way would he have gone there.

Frank Gilmour, chairman of the Newcastle United Independent Supporters Association, said: "Everyone suspected this when he signed but I'm very sad.

"I wouldn't say he should go because he is the best in the world and we need him back from injury as soon as possible.

"However, if the comments are true then it's offensive to supporters of the club."

Ben Hall, 19, from Donwell, Washington, has been a Newcastle United supporter all his life. He said: "Players such as Shearer would never have said anything like this.

"I think it's very disappointing for the fans if Owen has said this."

Matthew Lloyd, 29, a catering assistant from Byker, said: "I'm not surprised he has said this because I think he never wanted to come to Newcastle.

Jimmy Beresford, 47, a window cleaner from Washington, said: "Although I dislike Eriksson, I do believe him. I believe from day one Owen has not wanted to come to Newcastle. It is very disappointing for fans.

"All fans ask for is a bit of loyalty."

Eriksson was today said to have phoned players including Owen to apologise. …
