Mike Torpey drives the Fiat Croma 1.9 MultiJet Eleganza

Giorgetto Giugiaro is one of the most celebrated names in automotive design, up there with the icons of Italian style.

So when Fiat commissioned GG to design their new Croma crossover vehicle they wanted something a step beyond another "me-too" mid-range saloon.

It was a case of producing a car designed to pitch Fiat back into the motoring premier league and fulfil the needs of both families and fleets.

This he achieved in time-honoured fashion with a model which blends the benefits of hatchback, saloon and MPV, together with a fit and finish that's clearly out of the top drawer.

The Croma may have a less than inspiring name but at least it looks the part.

It is also appreciably taller than an average saloon car, and sports engaging Alfa Romeo-type rear lights, flared wheel arches, steeply sloping bonnet and, significantly, masses of interior space.

That space is extended to the boot, which is a cavernous flat-floored compartment that can be boosted further courtesy of 60/40 split rear seats. …
