Mums, dads and staff join forces to battle bulldozers

Parents and teachers at a North East primary school have vowed to step up their fight against its proposed closure.

Tyne View Community Primary is one of three schools Gateshead Council has earmarked for closure under a proposed shake-up of the education system to tackle surplus places.

A report is to be presented to the council's cabinet on Tuesday outlining a plan for closures, which could see Lindisfarne Community Primary School and Windmill Hills Community Primary School shut by September 2007.

Pamela Lowrie, headteacher at Tyne View Community Primary, has said she will "fight the closure to the end" and vowed "I will still be here when they bring the bulldozers". She called a crisis meeting this week with teachers and parents. A protest and petition now look likely.

"We are shocked at this proposal and feel that there is a lack of understanding of the importance of our school to both our immediate and wider communities," she said. …
