Frustrated Gallas Yearns to Be at the Centre of Chelsea Success

WILLIAM GALLAS today issued a new plea to Jose Mourinho to let him play in the centre of Chelsea's defence. Although Wayne Bridge's loan move to Fulham could reduce his hopes of playing alongside captain John Terry, the French star is convinced he is not playing in his best position.

Bridge's departure Mourinho only has Asier del Horno as cover at left-back and the Chelsea manager has claimed the Spaniard is still getting used to his team's busy schedule after his move from Athletic Bilbao last summer and needs to improve.

Gallas will know that between now and the end of the season he will be spending a good deal of his time on the left.

With new contract negotiations looming in the summer as he moves into the final year of his Stamford Bridge deal, he is likely to accept it and turn his versatility into a bargaining chip. But he will never see himself as a left-back. In four-and-a-half years at Chelsea, Gallas believes he showed his best form in 2002-03, when he played almost exclusively in the middle and was voted in to the PFA Team of the Year for the first and only time.

He told Chelsea's official magazine: "It was my best season. I played in my position. I showed everybody what I can do, how I'm good. …
